The Walk for Water Amelia Island raised $20,000 for Water Mission on Saturday, Oct. 17, according to a report published by the Fernandina Observer.
Participants set out from Central Park with empty buckets, walked about 1.5 miles to the beach, filled their buckets and carried them back. The approximately three-mile round trip returned walkers to Central Park, a route also described in the event’s official FAQ.
The bucket carry was intended to represent the journeys women and children make to collect water that may be unsafe to drink, according to the event organizers. The Observer’s report said the money raised would support Water Mission’s filtration units.
Water Mission is a Christian engineering nonprofit based in North Charleston, South Carolina. It develops safe water, sanitation and hygiene solutions for communities in developing countries, refugee camps and disaster areas.
The organization was founded in 2001. It says Charity Navigator has awarded it its top rating for 19 consecutive years.
This was Amelia Island’s third annual Walk for Water, according to the event website.
“Thank you Amelia Island for walking so others don’t have to!” read the message published by the Observer after the event.
