Costumed interpreters will portray some of Fernandina Beach's historic residents among the headstones of Bosque Bello Cemetery on Saturday, Oct. 10, as the fourth annual Graveside Chronicles walking tour brings local history to life.
The cemetery tour is among several Halloween-themed events planned around Amelia Island this month, including nightly ghost walks, a haunted kayak excursion on Lofton Creek and a family-friendly pumpkin celebration at a local brewery.
Graveside Chronicles at Bosque Bello Cemetery
The Amelia Island Museum of History and Amelia Island Genealogical Society will present Graveside Chronicles: Tales of Life, Love, and Legacy on Saturday, Oct. 10.
Guided 90-minute tours depart between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., taking visitors to eight historic gravesites at Bosque Bello Cemetery, 1321 N. 14th St.
Established in 1798 during Spanish rule, Bosque Bello is among Florida's oldest cemeteries. Its graves include lighthouse keepers, sea captains, politicians and military veterans.
Costumed presenters will share stories of people buried there, offering visitors a look at Fernandina Beach's history through the lives of former residents.
Tickets cost $25 per person and are available online only through the Amelia Island Museum of History.
The museum cautions that the cemetery's uneven terrain may not be suitable for wheelchairs or walkers.
Nightly ghost tours explore downtown Fernandina Beach
Ghost Tours of Amelia offers nightly walking tours through Fernandina Beach's historic district, sharing local ghost stories and accounts of the city's past.
The walking route covers approximately half a mile to a mile and ends at St. Peter's Cemetery. Ghost-hunting equipment is provided.
The standard ghost tour costs $35 per person, according to Amelia Island's tourism website.
The company also offers a Haunted Bar Crawl for adults 21 and older, visiting several downtown establishments while guides recount local legends. The tourism website lists the bar crawl at $40 per person, although the operator's booking information also displays a $45 price. Guests should confirm the current rate before booking. Alcoholic beverages are not included.
Reservations are available through Ghost Tours of Amelia Island.
Haunted Halloween Paddle brings costumes to Lofton Creek
Paddle Jax Amelia will host its seventh annual Haunted Halloween Paddle on Friday, Oct. 23, and Saturday, Oct. 24.
The guided kayak excursion takes participants on an approximately three-mile round trip along Lofton Creek at dusk, with decorated docks and trick-or-treating stops along the route.
Costumes are encouraged, and participants can vote for their favorite decorated dock.
The event begins at 6:30 p.m. each evening. Amelia Island's tourism website lists an approximate two-hour duration, while a separate event listing gives an ending time of 8:45 p.m.
A single kayak costs $65 per person, while a tandem kayak costs $130 for the two-person boat. Participants may also inquire about bringing their own kayaks.
The organizer advises that participants must already know how to kayak because the event is not designed for beginners.
Registration information is available through Paddle Jax Amelia.
