Nassau County residents can mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks at two public memorial events: a chapel service Thursday, Sept. 10, on Amelia Island and a law enforcement ceremony Friday, Sept. 11, in Yulee.

Chapel Service Precedes Official Anniversary

Amelia Island Plantation Chapel will host a memorial service and panel discussion at 10 a.m. Thursday in the chapel sanctuary, the Fernandina Beach News-Leader reported. Attendees will hear firsthand accounts from people connected to the attacks. The chapel event falls one day before the official anniversary.

The panel speakers have not been publicly identified.

Sheriff's Office to Hold Ceremony in Yulee

On Friday, the Nassau County Sheriff's Office will hold a memorial ceremony at 9 a.m. at the Law Enforcement Memorial, 77151 Citizens Circle in Yulee, according to Action News Jax. Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper and Nassau County Fire Chief Brady Rigdon will deliver remarks.

Eight New Firefighters To Be Sworn In

Rigdon will also swear in eight new firefighters during the Yulee ceremony. The swearing-in adds a forward-looking element to an event centered on remembrance.

The Yulee program includes performances by the Nassau Community Band, a 21-gun salute, a moment of silence and the playing of Taps.

Region Marks 25 Years Since the Attacks

Friday marks 25 years since nearly 3,000 people died in the terrorist attacks. Communities across Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia are holding memorial services, honor marches and moments of silence, Action News Jax reported.

Both Nassau County events are open to the public.
