Nassau County crews will mill and repave a stretch of Buccaneer Trail on Amelia Island over two nights, Wednesday, Oct. 7, and Thursday, Oct. 8, with work scheduled from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The work covers Buccaneer Trail from the South Fletcher Roundabout near Harris Teeter south to Marian Drive. Electronic message signs will be placed along the corridor to alert drivers, according to a traffic notice from Nassau County.

Overnight work planned to limit daytime disruption

The county scheduled the paving at night to minimize impacts on daytime traffic and provide a safer environment for crews, Nassau County Communications Officer Sabrina Robertson said in the notice.

The county did not specify whether Buccaneer Trail will be fully closed or reduced to one lane during the work.

Drivers should expect delays and follow signs and directions from crews in the work zone.

Paving is part of county resurfacing program

The project is part of Nassau County's fiscal 2025-26 Level & Overlay program, which falls under a broader Pavement Management Program approved in 2021.

The program uses road-condition data to prioritize streets for resurfacing.

Nassau County Road Director David Hearn told the Board of County Commissioners in March that the pavement program had reduced the average resurfacing cycle for county roads from 86 years to 22 years.

"In my opinion, we've seen a really big improvement in the quality of overlays completed," Hearn said during the March meeting.

Hearn also said contractor Hubbard Construction Co. had received a state industry award for its overlay work in Nassau County.

More paving planned at nearby roundabout

Drivers should expect another construction project along the corridor later in the week.

Final asphalt paving at the Amelia Island Parkway and Buccaneer Trail roundabout is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10, with work possibly continuing Sunday, Oct. 11, according to a county project update.

All 13 light poles at the intersection have been installed, according to the county.

The roundabout is expected to remain open while the paving work is completed.
