Nassau County will pave the final layer of asphalt at the Amelia Island Parkway and Buccaneer Trail roundabout on Saturday, Oct. 10. Work could extend into Sunday, Oct. 11, weather permitting.
The intersection will stay open during paving, according to a project update from Nassau County Capital Projects published Sept. 24. Drivers should expect single-lane closures. Flaggers and law enforcement will be on site directing traffic.
The paving weekend is one of the last major construction milestones for the roundabout project. The roundabout opened to traffic around July, according to the Fernandina Observer, after months of work that included a temporary closure of Amelia Island Parkway south of 14th Street starting March 25 to relocate water, gas and electrical lines beneath the intersection.
A Sept. 18 project update had confirmed the final paving was on track for the second weekend in October. That update also explained the sequencing: crews are finishing light pole installation before the final asphalt pour so heavy equipment does not damage the new surface.
Nassau County Communications Officer Sabrina Robertson noted in the Sept. 24 update that pole installation began the week of Sept. 21. Temporary lighting will remain at the intersection until the permanent fixtures are installed and powered on.
The Nassau County Board of County Commissioners approved the original construction contract with MAER Construction for $1,824,936.18 on Dec. 8, 2025, according to county meeting minutes. A $244,857.25 change order to accelerate Phase 2 work appeared on the commission's June 22 agenda. Together, the original contract and that change order total roughly $2.07 million, though the county has not published a final all-inclusive project cost.
The roundabout includes a truck apron, a slightly raised paved ring around the center island that allows school buses, fire engines and tractor-trailers to complete turns safely, Nassau County said.
Rafael Castro of KCI Technologies, Inc. serves as project administrator. Residents with questions about the Oct. 10 paving or the broader project can contact Castro or Nassau County Capital Projects. Weekly construction updates are posted on the county's project page.
