Fernandina Beach senior Rileigh Revere clocked 59.52 seconds to win the girls 100-yard backstroke Saturday at the Frank Holleman Invitational in Ponte Vedra Beach.

Revere's first-place finish came against swimmers from 12 other schools at Planet Swim, a meet that traditionally draws top competitors from across Northeast Florida. The Pirates were the only Nassau County team in the field.

Head coach Bill Stewart called the opponents "swimming powerhouses," according to the Fernandina Beach News-Leader, and congratulated his swimmers on what he called a great meet.

Revere cuts more than two seconds off her time

The win marked a significant jump for Revere. At the season-opening Nassau County meet on Aug. 27, she won the 100 backstroke in 1:01.72. Her 59.52 at the Holleman Invitational shaved more than two seconds off that time against a much deeper field. She also competed in the 200-yard individual medley at the invitational.

Revere was nominated for The Florida Times-Union's Girls Athlete of the Week for the week of Aug. 24-29 after that season opener, where she also won the 100 butterfly in 1:01.84.

Pirates girls finish eighth, boys 13th

The girls team scored 99 points to finish eighth out of 13 teams. Creekside took the girls title with 477 points, followed by Ponte Vedra at 435 and Nease at 314. Bolles, Bartram Trail, Fleming Island and Beachside also finished ahead of Fernandina Beach.

The boys team scored 40 points, placing 13th in the 13-team field. Bolles won the boys title with 448 points, and Nease finished second at 413, according to Jacksonville.com.

Building on a strong season opener

The invitational was a step up from the Pirates' season opener. On Aug. 27, the girls and boys teams combined to win 19 of 22 events in a Nassau County meet at the Atlantic Recreation Center against Yulee, West Nassau and Hilliard. "We did quite well," Stewart told the News-Leader on Sept. 7 about that performance.

Three weeks later, Revere's backstroke win showed the Pirates can compete beyond Nassau County.
