The deadline to register to vote in Nassau County's Tuesday, Nov. 3, general election is Monday, Oct. 5.
The Nassau County Supervisor of Elections posted the reminder on X on Friday, Sept. 18, marking 45 days before the election. The office urged residents to verify their status at VoteNassauFL.gov or call 904-491-7500.
The Nov. 3 ballot carries a contested Fernandina Beach mayoral race between Commissioners Genece Minshew and Timothy Poynter, according to a News4JAX voters guide. With only two candidates qualified, the race skipped the August primary and goes straight to the general election.
Statewide, voters will decide on Amendment 3, a proposed constitutional amendment that would raise the homestead exemption for non-school taxes to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028, according to an analysis by the Nassau County Property Appraiser. It needs at least 60% approval to pass.
Key deadlines
- Voter registration deadline: Monday, Oct. 5
- Vote-by-mail request deadline: 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22
- Early voting in Nassau County: Monday, Oct. 19, through Saturday, Oct. 31
- Election Day: Tuesday, Nov. 3, polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The Oct. 19 early voting start date comes from the elections office's Sept. 18 announcement. Florida law requires early voting to begin no later than Saturday, Oct. 24, but counties may add days. Vote-by-mail ballots must reach election officials by 7 p.m. on Election Day to be counted, according to a Jacksonville.com voter guide.
Driver's license mismatch
Voters who renewed or replaced a Florida driver's license or ID card after July 2024 should double-check their registration. The state's new ID process generates a random number that may not match the number on file with the elections office, according to the Fernandina Observer. A mismatch could mean extra steps at the polls.
Supervisor of Elections Janet Adkins said in May that her office had already taken steps to handle the issue. "I don't think [mismatched numbers] is going to be an issue," Adkins told the Fernandina Observer in May. "We encourage voters to reach out to us to ensure they can vote."
Adkins also advised mail-in voters to update their signatures every few years by submitting a new voter registration application. Her office checks every signature on mail-in ballot envelopes against the application on file.
Turnout and what's ahead
Nassau County had 80,938 registered voters as of the Aug. 18 primary, which drew 28.45% turnout, according to Nassau NewsLine. Election worker training for the general election was already underway as of Sept. 10, with workers wearing pink ribbons on their pins in memory of Dawn Hand, who served the elections office for 20 years.
Voters can check their registration, find polling locations and view sample ballots at VoteNassauFL.gov. The Supervisor of Elections office is at 96135 Nassau Place, Suite 3, in Yulee.
