Nassau County will break ground Monday, Sept. 28, on improvements to the John Claxton Boat Ramp on Wilson Neck Road. The project brings a new restroom building, stormwater upgrades and utilities to a site the county describes as a gathering spot for families and neighbors.
The scope includes an 850-square-foot restroom building with a covered patio, a new well and septic system, and a stormwater management facility designed to improve drainage and treat runoff, according to a Nassau County Public Works announcement published Sept. 20 on The County Insider, the county's official communications channel. Crews will demolish the existing concrete slab before constructing the new facility.
Construction is expected to run through April 2027.
Sabrina Robertson, communications officer for Nassau County Public Works, wrote in the announcement that the boat ramp is a well-loved spot where neighbors come together, enjoy the water and share time with family and friends. The county frames the project as an upgrade to a site that serves the surrounding community beyond its role as a boat launch.
The Nassau County Board of County Commissioners approved two contracts for the work at its Dec. 17, 2025, meeting. Commissioners voted unanimously to award Contract CM4015, worth $228,000, to A Plus Construction Services Inc. for restroom installation. They also approved Piggyback Contract CM4054, worth $185,073, to Romtec Inc. for design and supply of a prefabricated restroom, according to county meeting records.
All five commissioners voted in favor: Alyson R. McCullough, Jeff Gray, Klynt A. Farmer, John F. Martin and A.M. "Hupp" Huppmann.
The two contracts total $413,073. It is not clear from public records whether additional contracts cover other portions of the project, such as the well, septic system and stormwater work.
A Nassau County Chamber of Commerce capital projects update published Aug. 27 listed the John Claxton Boat Ramp Improvements among county capital projects currently in progress.
The county's announcement does not address whether the ramp will close to the public during construction. Residents with questions can contact Nassau County Public Works at (904) 530-6120.
