Fernandina Beach senior Beckham Rohe scored three touchdowns in the Pirates' season opener, enough to land him among Florida's top 25 scorers statewide. But the early fireworks couldn't carry into Week 2, as the Pirates fell to Tallahassee Leon 42-24.
Rohe, who caught two of his three touchdowns on just three receptions in the Pirates' 65-14 rout of Keystone Heights, ranked No. 24 on the MaxPreps statewide total-touchdowns leaderboard published Monday, Aug. 24. Union County's Bryce Lawton topped the list with 11 touchdowns.
The ranking gave head coach Blake Willis's squad a statewide benchmark after one week.
Then came Leon.
The Pirates were outscored 28-0 in the second half in Tallahassee, according to News4JAX. With the final score at 42-24, the math means Fernandina Beach held a 24-14 halftime lead before the collapse. The loss dropped the Pirates from No. 2 to No. 6 in the News4JAX Super 6 independent football rankings.
"If Rohe and Aydin Poe stay healthy all year, the Pirates are going to put up some numbers," News4JAX sports editor Justin Barney wrote in his Super 6 rankings published Aug. 18, before the Leon loss.
Both Rohe and Poe earned Times Union All First Coast third-team honors as athletes following the 2025 season. Last year, the Pirates won their first five games before dropping their final five, according to a preseason preview from the Fernandina Beach News-Leader.
Fernandina Beach (1-1) plays next at NFEI, which enters the matchup 0-1.
